On a day when the late great sports reporter Malcolm Brodie was remembered by players and fans alike, title chasers Cliftonville took another step towards glory.

A minute's silence was held at all Saturday's fixtures, followed by a minute's applause - to pay tribute to a man who had reported on local and international football with aplomb for decades.

Brodie, who was renowned for his World Cup coverage, died earlier this week aged 86.

When the action got underway, Cliftonville slotted four goals past visitors Lisburn Distillery without reply - including a Joe Gormley hat-trick and another goal courtesy of Stephen Garrett.

Linfield could only manage a 2-all draw against Windsor Park visitors Ballymena United, despite having led 2-nil through goals by Matthew Tipton and Brian McCaul.

The Sky Blues fought back to snatch the draw - David Cushley scoring both goals.

Glentoran, however, won out 1-nil over their opponents Portadown at Shamrock Park.

They did have to wait until the 58th minute though, before Richard Clarke found the back of the net.

Crusaders also fared well away to Donegal Celtic, with the game ending 3-nil to the guests.
David Rainey scored twice, while Timmy Adamson also added one to the scoresheet.

Glenavon bested their opponents Dungannon Swifts to go 3-1 up by full-time, with both teams down to 10 men.

James Costello had put the Swifts in the lead, but Guy Bates replied with a penalty arising out of Niall Henderson's sending off and Glenavon continued to capitalise.

But it was stalemate at Coleraine Showgrounds, where Ballinamallard United were the visitors.

Saturday's Irish League results

  • Cliftonville 4 - 0 Lisburn Distillery
  • Coleraine 0 - 0 Ballinamallard Utd
  • Donegal Celtic 0 - 3 Crusaders
  • Glenavon 3 - 1 Dungannon Swifts
  • Linfield 2 - 2 Ballymena Utd
  • Portadown 0 - 1 Glentoran
