The former Sunderland boss has been a hot favourite to succeed Giovanni Trapattoni at the helm.
O'Neill, himself a former Northern Ireland international, was named early on as a contender for the role - alongside the likes of Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane.
Back in September, he said there had been no contact regarding the job, but the odds still suggested he was leading the pack.
An announcement is now thought to be imminent.
The Republic of Ireland currently sit in 60th place in the FIFA world rankings.
