Brandon Benedict opened the scoring for Giants in the second period before Adam Calder equalised for the visitors.
In the final period referee Mike Hicks awarded a penalty shot to Coventry with ten minutes left which confused most of the home support and the Giants bench which Adam Calder dispatched past net minder Nathan Craze.
Giants captain Colin Shields gave his reaction to the decision.
"I have never seen a call like that before but apparently if you impede a shot by throwing a stick or a broken stick at it, it is a penalty shot in your zone.
But it could have a bit more of the ref's judgement the shot was coming barely over the blue line and the player still got the shot away so it's disappointing to loose a shot like that."
