The win puts the Giants four points behind League leaders Coventry Blaze.
The home side had to work hard for the points as the visitors put in a spirited performance.
Tim Cook opened the scoring for the Giants in the first period and his side kept up the offensive, with more goals following from Colin Shields and Jeff Szwez.
The Capitals continued to battle hard though, but a goal from Dan Welch was little consolation as the Giants held on for the points which keep them in touch with Coventry and Nottingham at the top of the Elite League.
The home side also welcomed back forward Pierre-Luc Faubert, returning for his first game after three months out through injury.
He was pleased with his side's performance and said he was glad to be back.
"It's been so long since I've been playing," he told UTV.
"It's hard to be off for three months and coming back and really not looking forward to playing a soft game.
"You want to do the best you can and prove that you've got a spot on that team."
Belfast Giants are next in action on Sunday night, taking on Edinburgh Capitals in an away game.
