The Northern Irishman got off to a strong start and took the first two frames against the man who beat him in last season's UK Championship final.
But a century break in the third signalled the start of a winning run for the Bristol player as the game swung in his favour.
Trump was in first in the sixth frame but ran out of position and Allen eventually worked a chance to level the scores, only to miss a straightforward yellow.
His luck looked to be in when the white ran close to a red - but Trump pulled off a superb thin cut with the rest and went on to win the frame and take the match in the next.
Allen tweeted his disappointment after the match.
