The victim was walking up the steps at Glen Colin Way, when the robber appeared behind her and demanded her handbag - which she handed over when she saw the machete he was holding over his head.
The robber headed back down the steps and turned left onto the Glen Road.
He's described as being about 21-years-old, 5ft 6ins tall and of a slim build, with dirty fair hair and a spiked fringe.
He spoke with a local Belfast accent and was wearing a blue hooded top with white writing on it and dark tracksuit bottoms.
Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
