The intruder, who rang the doorbell and then forced his way inside the Easton Crescent property, is believed to have been aged between 15 and 17 and was armed with a wooden-handled knife with a silver blade.
The woman managed to escape without injury.
It's understood that nothing was taken during the incident and the teenager made off, although the direction in which he headed is not clear.
According to police, the boy has been described as approximately 5ft 7ins tall and of slim build, with a pale complexion, dark eyes and dark hair with a fringe.
He was wearing a black waterproof top with the hood pulled up, black trousers and black slip-on shoes.
