A woman has been taken to hospital after being rescued from Newry canal by two police officers.

The pair jumped in at Merchants Quay at 3.45am on Saturday to rescue the victim, who did not suffer serious injuries.

Chief Inspector Sam Cordner commended the officers involved, saying: "The swift actions of the two local response officers undoubtedly saved this woman's life."

"Their bravery should serve as an example to all of us and underlines the kind of commitment all local officers have to providing a first class emergency service to the people of Newry," he said.
