A woman has died after being struck by a car in Dublin which failed to remain at the scene.

The victim, 40, was crossing the road at the Golden Bridge Luas stop, on Davitt Road, Drimnagh, when she was fatally hit on Friday at 10.30pm.

She was taken to St James' Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

A statement from An Garda Síochána said: "Witnesses described the offending car as dark coloured, possible a Ford Focus and either 08 or 09 registration.

"The car left in the direction of Naas Road. This car would have damage to the front and to the windscreen."

Forensic collision investigators examined the scene which has since reopened to traffic.

Anyone with information is ask to contact An Garda Síochána.
