A woman in her 20s is in a stable condition in hospital following a serious two vehicle collision in Gilford, Co Down.

It happened on Saturday night just before 9pm on Banbridge Road, which remained closed overnight.

The woman was in a critical condition in Craigavon Hospital overnight.

A spokesperson for the Southern Trust said on Sunday morning that she is now "comfortable."

Banbridge Road re-opened on Sunday afternoon.

Jo-Anne Dobson , UUP MLA for Upper Bann, said: "It's the very latest accident on this stretch of road and my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

"I'll be contacting the Minster's office [for roads, Danny Kennedy] tonight because I understand this stretch of road in particular has been closed four times in the last two weeks and we need to take urgent action to make sure that nothing else happens."

Police enquiries are ongoing. Investigating officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.

Also in Co Down, a man has been taken to hospital after a one vehicle crash in Killyleagh.

It happened on the Downpatrick Road, outside Delamont Country Park, just after 3pm. The man's condition is unknown.

The road was closed for a short while, but has since been reopened.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision - involving a silver Peugeot 307 to contact them.
