The incident happened in the Ballynoe Gardens area of the town at around 6.45pm on Saturday.

The woman was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but has since improved to stable.

Peter Weir, DUP MLA for North Down, said he was "shocked and disgusted" at the stabbing.

"This is an appalling act of depravity and will be rightly condemned by all right thinking members of society.

"It will horrify local people in the Kilcooley estate."

He said the community "must hope and pray for a swift and full recovery" for the victim.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in this area on Saturday evening and who may have witnessed the incident to contact them.
