The attack happened on Wednesday evening at around 6.30pm in the Old Newry Road area of the Co Down town.
Two men used a crow bar to force their way through a door in the house.
It's understood that when the woman tried to phone for help, she was struck on the head.
Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
One line of inquiry being investigating by police is a link between this incident and a burglary which occurred a short time later in Hillsborough.
Three men were arrested on suspicion of burglary at a property on Moira Road when police arrived at a burglary in progress. A fourth man was arrested a short distance away.
A policewoman was punched in the face during the arrest operation.
The arrested men - aged 18, 25, 27 and 54 - have been charged with aggravated burglary and going equipped for theft.
The 27-year-old man was also charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm while the 25-year-old received a further charge of obstructing police.
All four men are expected to appear before Lisburn Magistrates Court on Friday.
Jo-Anne Dobson, the Ulster Unionist MLA for Upper Bann, has spoken of her shock and disgust over the attack in Banbridge.
"I sincerely hope that this lady makes a full recovery from this traumatic ordeal.
"We live in a world where there is constant talk of rights, but the cowards who were responsible for this break-in didn't care about the right of this woman to live in peace and safety in her own home."
She added that people were "extremely angry" about the attack.
"It is essential that these individuals are caught as soon as possible to ensure that they do not get the opportunity to terrorise another defenceless person."
Police have asked for anyone with information about either of the burglaries to come forward and help them with their enquiries.
