A 37-year-old woman was arrested in relation to the incident which occurred in the Talbot Street area of the city on Saturday evening.
The victim was rushed to hospital after being slashed in the face at around 6pm.
A police spokeswoman said: "The man's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening."
He has since been released from hospital.
The woman had been detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.
However, on Sunday evening, police issued a statement saying the woman had been re-arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
She has been released on bail while police enquiries continue.
