The incident happened just before 4pm on Wednesday, when police said a man called to the woman's Upper Malone Road home claiming there was a fault with her neighbour's water.

He said he needed to check her property before searching the rooms in the house.

After he had left it was discovered that a sum of money had been stolen during the raid.

Police said the woman was not injured but left very badly shaken.

Detectives investigating the distraction burglary are appealing for anyone who may have information, or witnessed anything to contact police on 0845 600 8000.

Alternatively information about crime can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
