Two young men got into her house in Agnes Street at around 8pm on Friday.
It is understood the woman was slapped around the face during the attack, and at one point had a coat put over her head as she was pushed against a wall.
She was treated for cuts and bruising at the Mater Hospital, where she stayed overnight.
Local DUP MLA William Humphrey says the ordeal has left the pensioner "distressed and emotional".
"This woman went through a very serious and stressful ordeal in her home," he said.
"She was slapped by these people who put a coat over her face and pushed her against the wall. Her face has been left marked."
Mr Humphrey, who spoke to the victim on Saturday morning, added that she has no plans to leave the area after the incident
He said: "She seems very resilient; she's going to stay in her home but she is very nervous and apprehensive and at 85 years of age she is fearful at this time.
"This is so unrepresentative of the Shankill community. I would say to those involved - you are cowardly, this is an appalling attack."
Police have asked anyone who may have information to contact them.
