The victim was attacked close to an off licence in the Newtownards Road area, between Derwent Street and Solway Street.

Details of the assault, which happened shortly after 8.30pm on Saturday, have just been released.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he is still being treated.

Meanwhile in Castlereagh, a man has been attacked and robbed by a gang.

Three masked men assaulted the man in a house in the Castleview Court area shortly before 8am on Friday.

The victim was not seriously injured and a woman also in the house was left badly shaken.

The house was damaged during the attack and cash is also believed to have been taken.
