Oscar Knox, the brave four-year-old from Belfast who is battling cancer, has arrived in America to begin six months of treatment.

It comes after the family reached their goal of raising £250,000 towards his medical costs, with help from a social media campaign which went global.

Oscar suffers from stage four neuroblastoma - an aggressive childhood cancer which could kill him. He has now travelled to Philadelphia for immunotherapy.

However, the family tweeted that the money raised will only cover basic medical costs and encouraged supporters to keep the #TeamOscar campaign going.

They wrote: "Just so everyone knows, the £250k raised will cover the basic medical costs of Oscars planned treatment in the USA.

"However it doesn't leave much in reserve for any additional medical costs now or in the future. Let's keep it going to give him the best possible chance!!"

The campaign was started earlier this year to try and raise the money Oscar needed to go abroad to receive the care he requires - and he now has over 15,000 Twitter followers, including many famous faces such as Belfast boxer Paddy Barnes, Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, Celtic star Joe Ledley and others.

Last month, the family told UTV the support from across the world has helped them get through some of their darkest days.

Leona Knox said: "The past ten months, what Oscar has come through has been incredible.

"We get so many messages saying that he's an inspiration and he truly is because for a kid so young to go through that as a parent I can't even talk about how hard that is.

"He's still smiling and he lights up the ward, everyone loves to see him coming."

Oscar, who even got to try flying the plane and is now tired out after his long journey, has already thanked everyone who contributed to the fund and said he is both "nervous" and "excited" ahead of his treatment.

Best of luck to the family!!! I think it is a disgrace that this kind of treatment is not available here in the UK and they have to take a sick child so far away.. David Cameron should be focusing on things like this and not about taking money off poor people that can't work! Best of luck to them in my prayers!!
