Police have advised the Co Down public to be on the lookout for a missing wallaby and its joey, but warned them not to approach the animals.

The wallaby went missing from its home in the Knocksticken Road area of Clough, Downpatrick.

The animal, which is thought to be privately owned, has been missing since Friday and had its joey - which is white in colour - in its pouch at the time.

Police are advising the public that if they come across the animals not to approach them and to contact the PSNI immediately on 0845 600 8000.

Patrick Clarke of the Alliance Party told UTV the incident has been the talk of the town.

He said: "It seems to be somewhat unusual when you go into the village and hear people talking about a missing wallaby and a joey, it has been the talk of the past couple of hours and people are wondering who owns it, where it could be and what has happened to it?

"There is quite a bit of land and it is a rural area, having said that it's very close to Clough village and Dundrum. Obviously the police are taking it quite seriously, putting out a police warning, so it's certainly not an everyday occurrence in this part of Co Down.

"I have been told they are known to put their feet up and sort of box a wee bit, so my advice to anyone would be to stand well back and don't get too close to them."

Wallabies arent really that much of a threat, but like any animal with a young one it will protect itself if cornered. We have roos and wallabies on the farm in young NSW that we visit regularly and as soon as they see you they are gone. They like to hide in trees and bushy areas and only tend to graze in the open at dusk. Anyways best a luck. Great animal to see in the wild.
