The road will be closed in both directions between the Albertbridge Road junction and the Beersbridge Road junction over the weekend to facilitate emergency works.

Diversions have been put in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

A spokesperson for the Department of Regional Development said they are hopeful the area can be reopened to traffic by Monday.

"The department is continuing to carry out work to uncover the extent of the void and identify any underlying cause," a statement explained.

"A full repair will be completed over the weekend and, at this stage, it is hoped that Castlereagh Street could be open at the start of next week."

It comes after a void was found under the Ravenhill Road in south Belfast last month.
