Vigil held at the city Town Hall after the Newry bomb attack
A candlelit peace vigil has been held in Newry city centre in protest against a car bomb attack outside the courthouse on Monday night.

Local councillors helped to organise the Town Hall rally which was attended by up to 100 people on Friday night.

Trade unionist Seamus Larkin said Newry residents wanted to send out a strong "spontaneous and non-political" message.

"We are saying we don't agree with what happened earlier in the week," he said.

Newry traders also sent a letter to local newspapers saying it is "business as usual" following the bomb attack.

Police said it was a "miracle" no-one was injured or killed in the explosion as officers were in the process of evacuating the area when the car exploded.

The blast caused substantial damage to the heavily fortified courthouse and the nearby Downshire Road Presbyterian Church.

Dissident republicans have been blamed for the 250lb bomb.

The Newry attack is thought to be the first time a large car bomb has exploded in Northern Ireland since the Real IRA bombing of Omagh in 1998.
