Robert Robinson, who was aged in his 90s and from the local area, was walking along Drones Road when he was hit by a passing vehicle just before 6pm on Tuesday.

He was taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, where he later died.

Inspector David Anderson appealed for information: "Mr Robinson died after being struck by a vehicle at around 6pm and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact us or the Collision Investigation Unit at Steeple Police Station on the non emergency number 101."

North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has expressed his sadness over the death, saying the man was very well known and respected in the area.

"He would have often been seen walking on the road that sadly he was to lose his life on, following the fatal accident this evening," he said.

"He will be greatly missed. Especially to all those who knew him in the local area and with all those associated with Kilraughts Reformed Presbyterian Church, were he was an elder."
