A man has been arrested after a viable pipe bomb was found during a security alert in north Belfast.

The device was thrown at a parked car in the Duncairn Gardens area at around 11 am.

Police sealed off the road and carried out extensive examinations of the area and the device.

It was subsequently declared viable by army bomb disposal experts and has been removed for further examination.

A 27-year-old has been arrested by police and is currently assisting them with their enquiries.

The alert has ended and all roads reopened.

Police are appealing for information and can be contacted on the non-emergency number 101.
