Police officers were tasked to Spamount Street in the New Lodge area on Wednesday morning following the discovery of a suspicious object.It was examined by the army bomb squad and found to be a viable pipe bomb.The alert ended at around 1.30pm. Police said the device has been removed for further tests.A number of homes were evacuated during the alert, but residents have since been allowed to return to their properties.Sinn Féin MLA for North Belfast, Carál Ní Chuilín, has condemned the incident."Those criminal elements who have left a pipe bomb in a busy street have shown utter disregard for this community."Spamount Street is populated with families, many with young children and young people, some of whom had to be evacuated from their homes," she added."To leave a viable device is more than reckless, it is endangering the lives of the people who live here."Anyone with further information has been asked to contact the PSNI.
