Around 15 homes were evacuated in the Dunluce Avenue area, just off the Lisburn Road, after police received a report of a suspect object in the area on Monday.

Army bomb experts attended the scene and the object has been taken away for further forensic examinations.

SDLP South Belfast MLA Conall McDevitt has condemned those who left the device.

"I utterly condemn this incident and urge anyone with any information to pass it on immediately to the police.

"This was a self-defeating, pointless act perpetrated by people utterly at odds with the community."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
