It was discovered as police carried out a planned search of a house in the Crozier Park area of the Co Armagh town on Friday afternoon.
A number of residents had to be evacuated while the army bomb squad made the device safe.
The alert has now ended and the device has been removed from the scene for examinations.
A police spokesman said: "It is now safe for all evacuated residents to return to their homes."
The suspicious object, described as a "viable, explosive-type device", was found while police investigating serious crime were conducting a planned search of the property.
"The search of this property will now continue," the spokesman added.
