The former managing director of Ulsterbus, Werner Heubeck, has died in Scotland, aged 85.

Mr Heubeck became famous at the height of the Troubles for boarding his buses to carry to safety bombs which had been left by the IRA.

His inspirational leadership rallied the staff to keep the bus services running when buses were being attacked and destroyed on the streets and in their depots.

Born in Nuremberg in Germany in 1923, Mr Heubeck served with Rommel's Afrika Corps during the Second World War before arriving in Northern Ireland to head up Ulsterbus and Citybus in 1965.

He was awarded the CBE in the 1988, the same year he retired.

He died in hospital in Lerwick in Scotland on Monday, five days short of his 86th birthday.
