The party said the ongoing threat from dissident republican terrorists is of "grave concern" and is causing "grief and worry" throughout the region.

Earlier this month Prison Officer David Black was shot dead in an ambush on the M1, and a booby trap bomb was discovered under a car in west Belfast.

Speaking after the meeting, UUP leader Mike Nesbitt said it had been "positive" but called for further guarantees of funding to tackle the security threat.

"The Chief Constable offered us a reassurance that they are managing to get on with policing today's issues, but there is a fundamental problem with the terrorist threat which has got worse with the new combined grouping coming together," he told UTV.

"They're tackling it with money that is effectively bolt-on at present and which runs out early in 2015 and it seems to us that money needs to be embedded as a recognition that the terrorist threat will be around for some time to come and that it's a serious threat."

The party plans to meet Justice Minister David Ford next week.

Ryan, you're on the money there. Under resourcing is an issue, but then there's under utilisation of certain other officers eg traffic or road policing. They could be round the corner but won't get sent to it as "it's not their remit". Centralisation, the closure of smaller stations, along with sending the police to silly issues such as nonsense on facebook and you stretch what's there to breaking point. Morale among front line police officers is in the toilet, but I'll guarantee it that MLAs and Baggott will do sweet fanny adams about it.

It goes to show how under-resourced the PSNI are when you telephone them on a Tuesday night to report a violent disturbance in the street and they take half an hour to respond. Similar times have been recorded on around 3 occasions now. Also many criminals know that the PSNI can be very slow to respond so they are getting away with crime when they shouldn't be...
