The party said the ongoing threat from dissident republican terrorists is of "grave concern" and is causing "grief and worry" throughout the region.
Earlier this month Prison Officer David Black was shot dead in an ambush on the M1, and a booby trap bomb was discovered under a car in west Belfast.
Speaking after the meeting, UUP leader Mike Nesbitt said it had been "positive" but called for further guarantees of funding to tackle the security threat.
"The Chief Constable offered us a reassurance that they are managing to get on with policing today's issues, but there is a fundamental problem with the terrorist threat which has got worse with the new combined grouping coming together," he told UTV.
"They're tackling it with money that is effectively bolt-on at present and which runs out early in 2015 and it seems to us that money needs to be embedded as a recognition that the terrorist threat will be around for some time to come and that it's a serious threat."
The party plans to meet Justice Minister David Ford next week.
