John Huddleston, a 28-year-old Catholic, was shot a number of times by Loyalist paramilitaries at the front door of his Durham Street home on 24 March 1973 as he returned from a night out.

His brother was wounded in the attack.

Following a review by the Historical Enquiries Team, the murder case was transferred to the Serious Crime Branch to follow up new lines of enquiry

Detectives from the department, working with officers from the Lancashire Police and the North West Counter Terrorism Unit arrested the man on Tuesday morning as part of a renewed investigation into the murder.

He was released later that night.

A report will be prepared for the Public Prosecution Service.
