Shots were fired at three officers as they attended a suspected hoax burglary report in the Foxes Glen area of Dunmurry on Thursday, 16 May.
As they got out of their car, up to six shots were heard.
Witnesses said that the officers dived for cover and crawled on the ground until they reached their own vehicle before leaving.
No-one was hurt, but children had been playing in the area.
In follow-up searches of the area the next day, an explosive device was found, triggering a major security alert in the area.
Police said it may have been thrown at the PSNI officers as part of the attack.
On Saturday, police confirmed that two men arrested the previous day in Lisburn in relation to the gun attack had been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.
