Emergency services were called to Inch Strand at around 7pm on Thursday after the women, aged in their 60s and 70s, were spotted in difficulty in the water while taking an evening swim.

It is reported that lifeguards were able to bring the women to shore, but they were already in a critical condition.

The coastguard rescue helicopter was ordered from Shannon, and they were airlifted to Kerry General Hospital in Tralee.

However, they were later pronounced dead.

Inch Strand is a beautiful beach but very windy and the currents can be quite strong. I was down there in July and its a very popular place. The water in that part of Ireland is warm with the gulf stream. RIP. xx
