Two men have been shot in the legs in a paramilitary-style attack in the Creggan area of Londonderry.
Both men were taken down an alleyway and shot at around 6.30pm on Friday.
Police trying to help the victims came under attack from youths throwing missiles, fireworks and a petrol bomb.
Both men were taken to hospital where their conditions are said to be stable.
SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has condemned those responsible for the shootings.
"This area has seen an increasing number of violent incidents over recent months but these senseless, barbaric attacks must stop," he said.
The SDLP representative said there was no place in civilised society for any form of punishment attacks.
"We do not operate the law of jungle here in Derry or indeed anywhere else in the North.
"Those responsible have no support in our community and once again I would appeal to anyone with any information to pass it onto police.
"This is the best way to send a message to the vigilante thugs responsible that their actions will not be tolerated."
