They were 23-year-old Grant Archer, from New Mills, and 28-year-old Robert Wilkinson, from Cookstown.

The men died at the scene of the crash on the Old Coagh Road in Cookstown in the early hours of Sunday.

The collision happened at around 4am when the car veered off the road and crashed into a garden.

A police spokeswoman said: "Following the attendance of emergency services it was confirmed that the two occupants of the vehicle had been fatally injured.

"Police would appeal to anyone with any information or anyone who witnessed the accident to contact Cookstown police station on the new non-emergency number 101."

The deaths bring to 16 the number of people killed on roads in Northern Ireland since the beginning of the year.

Mid Ulster Assembly man Patsy McGlone said the accident was a terrible tragedy.

The MLA said: "I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the crash.

"The loss of any life in these circumstances is a tragedy but the fact that these two men were so young will only deepen the hurt the community is feeling.

"I want to extend my deepest condolences to the families of the two men whose lives have now been turned upside down as they begin grieving for their loved ones.

"This will be a very difficult time and they'll need all the support they can get from neighbours and friends," the SDLP representative said.

DUP MLA Ian McCrea said: "It is important that anyone with any information on how this accident happened should contact the Police as soon as possible."

The Old Coagh Road has been re-opened to traffic.
