Transport Minister Danny Kennedy sent the first tweet from the service on Wednesday.

It will allow users to access up-to-date information on abnormal traffic conditions in Northern Ireland direct to tablet computers and other portable devices.

A new SMS text messaging has also been introduced.

"Today's announcement is good news for road users," said UUP minister Mr Kennedy.

"We give a high priority to the provision of reliable, credible and timely traffic information as this enables roads users to make informed decisions about their journey.

"The social media enhancements Roads Service has added to the trafficwatch website will increase the availability of information to the public and is part of a Programme for Government commitment to improve online access to information.

"I would encourage people to register for this service and remind those receiving the information to comply with the law regarding the use of hand held devices when driving."
