Trial delayed in doctor's assault case

A District Judge at Londonderry Magistrates' Court has granted extra time to a defence barrister to take instructions from a doctor who has been charged with assaulting two police officers in the city last December.

Dr Eireann Kerr, from Marlborough Park South in Belfast works as an anaesthetist in Altnagelvin Hospital. The 30-year-old has been charged with assaulting a male and a female police officer following a staff Christmas night out in Derry city centre on 13 December. She is further charged with resisting one of the officers and with disorderly behaviour, also on 13 December. However, a charge of possessing an offensive weapon, namely an Apple iPhone, has been withdrawn.Defence barrister Eoghan Devlin told District Judge Barney McElholm that papers in the case had just been served by the Public Prosecution Service and he therefore required time to take instructions from the defendant.Mr McElholm adjourned the case until 21 February when the court will be told of the defendant's attitude to the charges. The defendant, who was not at the hearing on Thursday, is on court bail. Her bail conditions are that she must not be intoxicated in a public place and that she must submit to a preliminary breath test if requested to do so by the police in a public place.
