Stuart Wilson was being towed on a wake board at Cranfield beach when he was struck by a speedboat on Monday.
He died in hospital on Thursday afternoon after sustaining serious head injuries in the accident.
At his funeral in Rathfriland on Saturday afternoon, Rev David Somerville described Stuart as a "wee treasure".
"He was the child you noticed, the one whose name everybody knew. He was full of life and lived life to the full."
Rev Somerville said everyone had a special memory of Stuart, the youngest of four children.
"He threw himself into everything he did. He loved anything to do with water and he lived for the annual summer breaks at Cranfield.
"The family will feel very differently about that much-loved place now."
Hundreds of mourners lined the streets of Rathfriland as the funeral service took place at St John's Parish Church.
A private service had been held at the family home earlier.
Hundreds of people also stood outside the Wilson home during the family service to show their support.
Stuart's family say they have been overwhelmed by the prayers and support they have received from the local community.
