A two-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital following a two-vehicle road crash in Kircubbin, Co Down.

The collision on the Rubane Road happened shortly after 8.15am on Thursday.

PSNI Inspector McClurg said: "It was reported that a Volvo S40 and a Ford Transit van were involved in the incident.

"A young female child has been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment for her injuries."

A spokesperson for the Belfast Trust confirmed that the child is being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital, where she is in a critical condition.

A man, believed to be the van driver, and the female driver of the Volvo were also treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Rubane Road re-opened on Thursday afternoon after being closed for most of the day.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or anyone who was travelling on the Rubane Road at the time, to contact them on the non-emergency number 101.
