Three remanded over loyalist shooting

Three men have appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court on charges linked to the shooting of a prominent loyalist in Belfast.

Appearing in court on Saturday morning were 46-year-old community worker John Howcroft of Formby Park, Belfast, John Bunting, 47, of Stonebridge Avenue in Conlig and 31-year-old Darren McAllister from Alliance Road, also Belfast.They are charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to commit murder.The charges relate to the shooting of 44-year-old high-profile loyalist John Boreland, who was shot in the leg on Wednesday night in the Ballysillan Road area of north Belfast.Another high-profile loyalist, Andre Shoukri, who was in the car with Mr Boreland at the time of the incident, managed to escape the attack without injury.In the short hearing, a detective told the court that he believed he could connect all three to the charges.No application for bail was made.All three were remanded into custody and will appear in court by way of video-link on 18 September.
