A man, 61, his daughter, 42, her two sons, 16 and 17 and her five-year-old girl were asleep in the Spelga Park property when a bag of rubbish was placed at a door of the house and set alight at around 4am.
Fire crews were alerted, attended the scene and led the family to safety.
"No one was injured during this incident," a police spokesperson said.
Smoke damage was caused to the inside of the property and the PVC door was also damaged.
Local DUP councillor Carla Lockhart says the attack is "very alarming".
"Spelga Park is a very quiet area and one that has not been subjected to such attacks in the past. This could have had a very different outcome and I am pleased that everyone is safe. My continued thoughts are with those caught up in this ordeal."
Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have been in the vicinity and noticed any suspicious activity - or anyone who has any information to contact them.
