Thousands of people have turned out to watch the Royal Black Institution parades at six venues across Northern Ireland on Saturday.

Around 17,000 members marched in Antrim, Ballygawley, Comber, Donemana, Limavady and Newry.

The largest demonstration was held in Newry where 5,000 members paraded, with a total of 115 preceptories and 110 bands marching in the Co Down city.

It is thought around 50,000 watched the parade, which was last held in Newry in 1998.

The last Saturday in August is traditionally the most important day in the Royal Black Institution's year.

It would appear that the majority of Newry's residents didn't oppose this parade. No protests or trouble shows this.Though any unionist who claims that their culture is being eroded or being denied their culture by republicans would be well advised to remember that both Ballygawley and Newry are majority towns.Along with at least 15 other places I can name loyal order parades are tolerated and left alone.

Is the nonsense over for another year, yet? And Lorna.....Sinn Fein hijacked the Easter Rising? One of your more amusing posts made even more laughable by the last comment, "Remember some of the persons involved in the ER were Protestant." Please elaborate as to where this obtuse observation is going. One would think that you would like to be a Republican but that staunch religious organisation, Sinn Fein, is preventing you from doing so. I'm still laughing as I type....

what a good suggestion - i'm certainly in favour of that - ban all parades. job done.

Eamond. If the Easter Rising had not been hijacked by Sinn Fein/IRA they may have been welcomed in Ballymena. We are still getting over the violence these people producted. Remember some of the persons involved in the ER were Protestant.
