Between 400,000 and 500,000 teachers, nurses, firefighters, council and NHS workers, other public sector employees, students, pensioners and campaign groups from across the UK marched through central London on Saturday.

The rallies in Northern Ireland were organised by trade unions to highlight the difficulties being faced by local hospitals, schools and other public sector areas.

Protesters also criticised the decision by Health Minister Michael McGimpsey to shelve a planned radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin Hospital.

In Belfast, teachers, nurses, midwives, council staff and other public sector workers marched from the Art College at York Street to City Hall.

An anti-cuts march was also held in Derry's Guildhall Square.

Unison Regional Secretary Patricia McKeown, who attended the march in Belfast, said trade unions "are saying no to cuts".

"We're out to protect our welfare state; we're out to protect our public services. We want our hospitals built".

In London, violence flared away from the rally when a group of hundreds of activists, not connected with the union protest, clashed with police. They set off fireworks, threw paint and attacked shops in Oxford Street, Regent Street and Piccadilly.

Topshop and HSBC had their windows smashed, while paint and glass bottles were thrown at a Royal Bank of Scotland branch. TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said he "bitterly regretted" the violence, but hoped it would not detract from the massive anti-cuts protest.

The Stormont budget contains £4bn in spending cuts over the next four years.

Perhaps that's why we're facing the cuts, so they can have more to finance their wars? Think of all the unemployed they'll be able to get rid of once it all kicks off. Mark, did it ever occur to you that we may have more people on disability and unemployment benefits as we had more casualties due to bombs and shootings compared to the rest of the UK, or indeed that said bombs and bullets saw the demise of many businesses and stopped anyone from ever wanting to invest here? Brian, debts are never cleared for that would be a form of emancipation, which our slave drivers would never consider, freedom was banned years ago. Tricky, The government in London assigned our lot the £4billion less over the next 4 years, so in a strange wee way they are kind of responsible. In another bizarre twist, the (mostly Conservative government) was also partly responsible for the Troubles over here and several thousand deaths, if not millions globally with their capitalist agenda and draconian policies to ensure the poor either sign on or sign up for the aforementioned, pre-ordained, months in the planning wars they have lined up for our kids over the next few years. We are the underdogs, if you can't see that I suggest you make yourself a strong cup of coffee.

@ Tricky, Why then are the UK/US not attacking Israel, Saudi Arabia, or China to name a few?. These Countries are bigger human rights abusers than libya will ever be and have been murdering and torturing people for many more years. Why do the 'alliance' not protect the underdogs in these Countries. This has nothing to do with protecting civilians. The British/American governments are supporting Islamic extremists in overthrowing the democratically elected leader of Libya (a leader who they armed). How do you think thats going to work out in the long run?.

There is no excuess for the war in Libya full stop. they are just looking the Oil there, ohh and to keep their thousands of soldiers in employment. its just like iraq and the weapons of mass destruction that they never found .... There is plenty of money for the hospital, they just dont want to spend it after all there is no oil in Derry. So its not an investment for them.

LONDON HAS NO SAY ON THE HOSPITAL BUILDING HERE, GOVERNMENT THERE IS NOT FASCIST. LIAMBO LOOK AT YOUR DOORSTEP FOR THE ANSWERS. IF YOU WANTED THE UK TO STOP HELPING THE UNDER DOG. THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE IT YEARS AGO AND THEN WHERE WOULD WE BE. MAYBE YOU WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN BORN. WHAT THE UK IS SPENDING IN LIBYA IS ONLY A TEASPOON COMPARED WITH WHAT HAS BEEN SPENT ON HERE. STILL WE KICK THEM BACK IN THE TEETH.
