Thousands of people have attended the first ever Armed Forces Day in Newtownards.

Held in the Co Down town, the event included a host of military exhibitions, parades and an impressive aerial display.

The event was the first time local people have had the opportunity to witness a combined operation with both land and air troops and equipment at close quarters.

The highlight of the day was the combined capability demonstration with land and air service personnel carrying out an attack/rescue situation.

The chart-topping Military Wives Choir also performed for the many people in attendance.

Ards Borough Mayor, Councillor Philip Smith, said: "This was an opportunity for us to pay tribute to all those serving in the forces.

"We had people from the borough, all over the province and further afield to see what the military had to offer and for them to make their tribute."
