The 17-year-old, who cannot be named, was arrested along with three other youths after PSNI officers used a stinger device to halt the Volkswagen Golf in west Belfast.

He appeared before the city's Youth Court on Monday charged with handling stolen goods and allowing himself to be carried in a vehicle taken without the owner's consent.

The car was stolen from an address in the north of the city around noon on Saturday with sightings made in the Ballysillan, Carlisle Circus and Westlink areas.

A police air support unit helicopter followed its movements for officers on the ground.

The car was then stopped when the stinger device was deployed on the Suffolk Road later that afternoon.

Four occupants, aged between 13 and 17, were detained close to the scene.

An officer hurt during the arrest operation required hospital treatment for a shoulder injury.

Police said the two oldest suspects were later charged in connection with the alleged vehicle theft.

The 17-year-old was remanded in custody following a hearing at Belfast Youth Court.

He is due to appear again by video-link on 3 January.

A 16-year-old has been charged with aggravated vehicle theft, handling stolen goods and other motoring offences, according to police.

No information was available on when he is due before a court.

Two other youths, 13 and 15, have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
