It was reported to police that the girl was assaulted in the Magazine Street area of the city in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Derry City councillor Angela Dobbins extended her sympathies to the victim and her family.

The SDLP representative added: "There's nothing more abusive than a sexual attack on a vulnerable teenager.

"The individual behind this cruel, devastating attack is absolutely depraved and poses a serious risk to others.

"As citizens of this city, we all have a duty of care toward one another and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area to report it to the police as a matter of urgency."

Police can be contacted on 101, or information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
