Megan Nash, 18, died when the car she was a passenger in collided with another car on the Ballytrim Road near Killyleah at around midnight on Friday.

Three other people were also hurt in the collision involving a Renault Clio and a Ford Ka, but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Her death comes just 48 hours after three people were killed in another collision in the area.

Megan was from the Killyleagh area.

Relative and local councillor Billy Walker has been spending time with the family.

"They are totally devastated. They cannot speak, they're numb.

"It's understandable. They've lost a beautiful daughter, a beautiful sister, a beautiful cousin and it's hard to come to terms with, particularly at this time of year."

On Thursday John Mark Pirie, 31, was one of three people killed in a crash on the Killinchy Road outside Comber.

"They go out and when they go away you say cheerio and you wonder will they get home safely?" DUP MLA Jim Shannon asked.

"So I think all of us has a role to play, as elected representatives, as parents, as individuals, just to be careful on the roads and do our best but let's face it no matter how good a driver you think you are, sometimes things just happen, and that's a fact as well."

Megan's death brings the number of people killed on the roads so far this year to 113.
