The 19-year-old man was crossing the old N1, five miles north of Drogheda, on Sunday evening when he was struck by a car and fatally injured.
He has been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital ahead of a full post mortem.
Police in the Republic of Ireland said the driver was not hurt. He was the only person in the car when the crash happened at around 8.30pm.
The Monasterboice exit from the M1 travelling south was closed overnight to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and has since reopened.
Gardaí asked anyone with more information to get in touch.
