The distraction burglary happened in the Castlereagh Road area of the city shortly after 10am on Friday.

Two men alleging to be from the water service called to the house of the elderly man and told him that he had a burst pipe.

"He let them into the house and whilst there they distracted him and went upstairs and stole money," a PSNI spokesman said.

"The elderly man was not injured during this incident; however he was left very badly shaken."

Police say they later arrested three men aged 16, 20 and 23 in connection with the incident.

They remain in police custody.

Detectives have asked anyone who may have noticed any suspicious vehicles or persons in the area to contact them at Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101.
