Police said a number of demonstrators had to be moved off the road in the Castlereagh Street area.

The teenager was detained in the area on suspicion of disorderly behaviour at around 8.20pm.

"Police are maintaining a presence in the east Belfast area," a spokesperson said.

The boy was charged with the offence on Wednesday morning and will appear before Belfast Youth Court on 30 December.

Earlier in the evening around 200 people demonstrated peacefully at City Hall before dispersing shortly after 7pm.

A number of other protests took place in Omagh and Portadown - they coincided with the one-year anniversary of Belfast City Council's decision to fly the Union flag on designated days.
