The missiles were thrown in the Beersbridge Road area at officers responding to a report of bins set alight at the junction of Castlereagh Street and Templemore Avenue on Sunday shortly after 10.25pm.

Police said no one was injured and a crowd of young people who had gathered in the area dispersed.

A number of fireworks were also believed to have been thrown in the Castlereagh Street area, but again no one is believed to have been injured.

A 17-year-old boy was detained on suspicion of attempted criminal damage in relation to the incident.

He was charged to appear at Belfast Youth Court on Friday 19 September.

It follows disorder on Saturday night, when rival factions of loyalist and nationalist youths threw petrol bombs as they clashed in the Castlereagh Street, Mountpottinger Road, Woodstock Link and Albertbridge Road areas.

Inspector King said: "Police officers are committed to keeping people safe and a small minority of individuals showed a complete disregard for their area and the community who live there, by attacking police last night.

"Thankfully no one was injured and despite this incident, police will continue to provide the dedicated service to the local community."

Police are appealing for information in relation to these incidents and would ask anyone who witnessed these incidents to contact Musgrave station on 101.

Alternatively information can be provided anonymously through independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
