A taxi driver has escaped a hijacking bid by armed men in the Vicarage Street area of east Belfast.

The driver was travelling along Erskine Street shortly after 2am on Tuesday, when three masked men approached him.

One of the men was armed with a hammer and tried to smash the passenger side window of the car but was unsuccessful.

Another man is believed to have been armed with a suspected handgun.

The driver managed to get away from the scene unharmed, but was left badly shaken.

Police are investigating and have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has any information to contact CID at Musgrave Police Station.
