Samurai sword used in Newtownabbey robbery
A man armed with a samurai sword has held up a filling station in Newtownabbey.

The incident happened shortly before 9pm on Wednesday night at premises on the Doagh Road.

The thief made off in the direction of the Rathcoole estate with a sum of cash.

Earlier, the same man attempted to rob a fast food outlet on the Church Road but failed to gain access.

He is described as being around 5ft 10ins tall, wearing blue jeans and a light grey camouflage hooded top, red gloves and white trainers.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are particularly keen to speak to a man and two women who were in the filling station at the time of the robbery.
